RECEIVES BEST CHEF: SOUTH 2010 JAMES BEARD AWARD

In the three years since it opened its doors in the Miami Design District, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink has become a definitive dining destination in the region, earning accolades, a devoted fan base, and extensive media coverage in virtually every major media outlet.  Owner/Chef Michael Schwartz, one of South Florida’s most respected toques, has emerged as a culinary icon, a major talent as dedicated to the art of cooking as to the sustainability of the ingredients that make his cuisine possible.  On Monday, May 3, Schwartz’ efforts were recognized when he received one of the highest honors a professional American chef can earn: a James Beard Foundation Award.  Schwartz received his award (Best Chef: South) at the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards ceremony, which was held in New York City at Avery Fisher Hall. It was his second nomination for the prestigious honor.

“I’m honored to be recognized by the James Beard Foundation as 2010’s Best Chef: South,” says Schwartz. “To be in the company I’m now in is very humbling and inspirational.”

The James Beard Foundation Award, considered by some as the culinary equivalent to the Academy Awards’ Oscar, is the perfect kick-off to what will be a very busy year for Schwartz.  The chef’s second Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink restaurant is slated to open Wednesday, June 9 at Camana Bay in the Cayman Islands, while his first cookbook, “Michael’s Genuine Food: Down to Earth Cooking for People Who Love to Eat,” will be released by Clarkson Potter in February 2011.
