Winter in South Florida usually guarantees a dip in temperature, but it’s always a bit of a roller coaster. This one is as unpredictable and warm as any we can remember! As we coast through the soft and cuddly middle of South Florida Beer Week, let’s take a moment to geek out with Beverage Director Ryan Goodspeed and hear what’s new and drinking great in this
fickle fantastic weather on our restaurant beer lists and across our great beer-loving community. Cheers!
Beginning today at MGFD, Brewery Dupont Saison makes a return to menus after going out of stock for a month. Goodspeed says it’s considered by many to be the best Farmhouse Ale out of Belgium, with subtle spice and fruity aroma that makes it the perfect beer for, say, a relaxing, late afternoon lunch? It is fermented in the bottle at a slightly higher temperature resulting in a highly carbonated, light and refreshing flavor and finish. Stone Ruination India Pale Ale, now available in 12 oz bottles from the award-winning brewery most famous for its Arrogant Bastard will satisfy the growing legion of hop heads around town.
“Columbus and Centennial hops take the forefront of this product and given the 7.7 % ABV and IBU’s over 100… one can only assume that these were in the boil and most likely dry hopped as well,” he adds. It also provides a nice contrast (in terms of IPAs) to the Terrapin Hopsecutioner already on tap at the restaurant, per snappy handle pictured above! The Terrapin packs a punch with six varieties of hops in the brew and a slightly more resinous, piney profile thanks to the Cascade in the mix.
Rounding out the group is the highly rated St. Peters Cream Stout, in a highly rounded unusual bottle! Goodspeed explains it’s also called a sweet stout or milk stout, brewed with lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness, body, and calories to the finished beer. “Milk stout was claimed to be nutritious, and was given to nursing mothers, along with other stouts, such as Guinness… back in the day,” he says. Chocolate, toffee & espresso are the dominant flavors.
Harry’s is getting crackin’ with Florida Cracker White from Cigar City (Tampa.) I tasted the Cracker last night, and it is a very enjoyable pale ale with a pleasing straw color, citrus and coriander notes, and a floral finish. I can imagine enjoying a pint sitting outside in the shade of our umbrellas with a light breeze of herbs and flowers from our planters and a snack of housemade ricotta and foccaccia on the table.
The Home Brew love around town continues and we couldn’t be more proud or thankful of the outpouring of support for our genuine brew. This week we are happy to report that Michael’s Genuine Home Brew is now available in 22 oz bottles at Shake Shack in Coral Gables, joining its sister on SoBe. We love us some Danny Meyer and friends, and are super honored to be served at both South Florida locations. Heard that 859 likes! We love when Genuine Shack Fans unite : ) For a full list of where Home Brew is available locally, visit our constantly-updated About page on the Michael’s Genuine website. It was so great to see many beer lovers out last night at The Room and The Broken Shaker with lots of little brown towers of Schwartzgoodness on tables. We also hope the same will soon be true for our brewers at Back Forty Beer Company in Gadsden, Alabama. They’re looking at expanding distribution for their portfolio (currently available at MGFD and Harry’s) across town, and that is music to our ears. Keep them perked and so will we!
Last but not least, January 24 marks the launch of Home Brew on tap at one of Ft. Lauderdale’s best watering holes for craft beer lovers, Tap 42. It’s one of our favorites up north, and we’re excited to join them Thursday for a takeover with some of the best breweries in Florida to support Drink Like a Local, a program we know well and love at our restaurants, and you should get to know, too. There will be a full Cigar City Firkin of Fresh Humidor IPA Double Dry hopped with Cascade and a massive selection of locally-brewed beers, some that aren’t even distributed yet. The full list is here! Join us for unique beer and even some giveaways from the Genuine crew like Home Brew trucker hats and cookbooks.
