Pop Goes the MGFD Cafe at Design Miami/

Our busiest week of the year at HQ in the Design District is indisputably the week Art Basel and the Design Miami/ fair come to town, and with them, innumerable satellite fairs and exhibitions, complete with throngs of artists, collectors and enthusiasts. It’s party time and we can’t get enough of it!

This year we are pleased to announce that show-goers will be able to enjoy Michael’s Fresh, Simple, Pure food & drink on Miami Beach thanks to a new partnership with Design Miami/ and its first pop-up restaurant at the fair, the Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Cafe. Operating during show hours, the cafe will serve a menu of some of our favorite hot and cold dishes as well as snacks to go, Michael’s Genuine Home Brew, Panther Coffee, sweet treats by executive pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith, and much more. A huge thanks to Breville for donating panini presses and Smart Ovens for us to hook-it-up for guests! We’re working on a massive chalkboard menu complete with our cafe logo, and some other iconic touches to bring the genuine feeling to the space. Click here for the Design Miami/ 2012 press release, and here for the menu. Happy arting!

Hedy Attends to Pressing Matters Next Week at Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival

Testing testing: Hedy’s panini will feature Martin’s Potato Rolls instead of her usual brioche as a fun twist.

Next week Hedy will participate in two events at the Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival. When you live in Miami, a little west coast action can also be good practice for book tour travel and its demands, fast approaching for Baking Out Loud, Hedy’s first cookbook out on October 2. On Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Nokia Plaza, it’s Giada’s Festa Italiana featuring a host of culinary icons serving their takes on Italian cuisine. Italian desserts are one of Hedy’s sweet spots especially when panini are involved! Breville, who filmed her and Michael back and June for its webisode series and cookbook promo video (see the behind the scenes pictures below!) came to the table with presses for her station to turn out Nutella Panini with Bananas, Toffee, Bacon and Espresso! Over 200 wines from around the world will be poured alongside top brews and spirits, too.

Saturday’s event is Lexus LIVE On The Plaza With Wolfgang Puck & Friends, same time and place, taking a decadent turn where Hedy is concerned! She’ll serve tastes of Bittersweet Chocolate Cake with Curry, Coconut & Cardamom with Cherry Chutney and Spiced Cashew Brittle! This strolling reception brings together 30 chefs with 200 wines poured, too. Tickets for both events are available via the links in this post.

Have fun Hedala, and please Tweet so we can take it all in with you despite not traveling for the party!

Michael & Hedy Bring Miami’s Frita to Philly for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Great Chefs Event

Eat your hearts out Cuban sandwich shit talkers!  From the controversy, we slip into a happy place where the undisputed burger of Cuba reigns king in Miami — the frita.

After successfully bringing back the scrapple to Philadelphia at last year’s Alex’s Lemonade Stand Great Chefs event hosted by Marc Vetri, Michael was inspired by the best frita-maker stateside for next Tuesday’s tasting for a cause.

We’re speaking of none other than El Mago de Las Fritas, on West Flagler in Little Havana.  Michael named El Mago’s frita one of his top five burgers in Miami in a recent post on Serious Eats’ A Hamburger Today blog!  He and executive pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith have collaborated on a macked-out version of their own complete with homemade components.  Get the recipe below, and stay tuned for a demo the two will do for Breville and its webisode series, Thought for Food.  Their version features homemade Cuban bread buns and shoestring potatoes, which are substituted below for store-bought — making for a more home-friendly burger (You can blame it on me!)

El Mago knows best!  Here, the caballero frita complete with fried egg.
