The stars were out this past weekend! Answering the call of sweet duty, executive pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith and her sous Trew Sterling represented us in Los Angeles on Sunday for L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Alex’s, a national non-profit committed to finding a cure for all childhood cancers, has successfully created a culinary roadshow of sorts, traveling the country each year to fundraise by popping up events in select cities thanks to host chefs who embrace the cause. Michael attended for the first time in Philly over the summer on the invitation of hometown friend Marc Vetri; Jonathan Waxman will bring it to New York for the first time in December with Lemon NYC.
The La La land satellite is hosted by Suzanne Goin, and Hedy brought her A game to the table in a conundrum of candies — Smoked Hazelnut, Bourbon & Bacon Brittle, Curried Cashew Brittle, & Thai Peanut Brittle, as well as blocks of Roasted White Chocolate & Smoked Bittersweet Chocolate, supplied by our west coast cacao cronies at TCHO. Satisfying us for a moment, pictures of her spread are here, courtesy Heidi Ladell (both the images and the art direction that would make Sandra Lee weep tablescape tears of joy.) But we wanted more. We had questions! What’s the juice from Hollywood? Last night the answers arrived in our inbox:
The Genuine Kitchen [TGK]: Buzz among chef circles ie was there an ingredient, chef, news story that the culinary crowd couldn’t stop talking about?
HEDY & HEIDI [H&H]: RAW UNI SCOOPED RIGHT OUT OF ITS SHELL ONTO YOUR PLATE. THANK YOU DAVID LENTZ & THE HUNGRY CAT (Suzanne’s husband)
TGK: Favorite bites at event?
H&H: JON SHOOK AND VINNY DOTOLO’S GRILLED QUAIL WITH CHAR SIUM APPLE AND YOGURT

TGK: Something that made you go hmmmm?
H&H: THE MOST INCREDIBLE AUCTION ITEM AND THE $60,000++ THAT WENT TO THIS AMAZING CAUSE:
DINNER FOR 12 GUESTS COOKED AT YOUR HOME BY ALICE WATERS, GIADA DE LAURENTIIS, NANCY SILVERTON, SUZANNE GOIN AND SHERRY YARD WITH WINES FROM COLGIN
HAVING RAINED ALL MORNING THERE WAS NO LESS THAN 3″ OF MUD IN AND AROUND THE EVENT. WE WERE SCHLEPING AT 47˚ MAJOR WIND GUSTS AND RAIN, RAIN, RAIN. YOU’VE NEVER SEEN CARDBOARD BOXES BROKEN DOWN SO FAST TO BE USED AS MAKE SHIFT FLOORS BEHIND EACH CHEF STATION TO PREVENT TEAMS FROM SINKING IN THE MUD. AMAZINGLY, 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE EVENT BEGAN, THE SUN APPEARED. TOO LATE THOUGH, WELLIES AND GALOSHES RULED THE DAY.
TGK: Best celebrity sighting and where?
H&H: APPARENTLY TREW “SAID” HE SAW KIRSTEN DUNST, BUT I’M NOT SURE HE EVERY FULLY RECOVERED FROM HIS PHOTO SANDWICHED BETWEEN NEIL PATRICK HARRIS AND DAVID BURTKA! THAT LEFT HIM BREATHLESS.
TGK: Memorable meal?
H&H: AS OUTSTANDING AS DINNER WAS AT SON OF A GUN (and the 4 orders of shrimp toast with herbs and siracha mayo), AND THE GRILLED RIB EYE COOKED BY MARC VETRI IN NANCY SILVERTON’S WOOD BURNING WHILE KEEPING WARM UNDER PROPANE HEATERS.
(ISN’T LA THE LAND OF BLUE SKY AND 75˚?), LUNCH AT THE phomish TRUCK ON WILSHIRE BLVD. (vietnamese steak bahn mi, lemongrass chicken vermicelli) WAS COMPRABLE TO BOTH. http://yfrog.com/g04qatbj
TGK: Hours clocked smoking chocolate
H&H: TCHO WHITE CHOCOLATE WAS ROASTED AND
TCHO DARK CHOCOLATE WAS COLD SMOKED FOR 30 MINUTES PER HALF KILO
BOTH DONE IN THE KITCHEN AT THE LONDON HOTEL
