As if anyone needs a reason to go to Italy, here are a couple…

Cooking lessons by Michael Schwartz in Bernalda, the town where Francis Ford Coppola’s grandfather was born, at a Palazzo that Francis transformed into a hotel. The surrounding countryside, which was settled by the Greeks before the Roman era, is part of the Hellenic Magna Graecia—the coastal areas of Southern Italy—where the thriving local agriculture produces sumptuous fruits and vegetables, as well as the Aglianico grapes used to make wines of the same name.

“Genuine Basilicata” – Palazzo Margherita in Bernalda – May 21 – 29, 2013

21 Maggio:

  • Welcome Party and Wine Tasting : Le terre del Primitivo (Primitivo’s lands), red wine DOC from Puglia and Basilicata.

  • Dinner at Palazzo Margherita (Mixed grill of meat with first courses served Family Style) in our garden

22 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • Cooking lesson with Michael (guests help prepare lunch with Michael and staff)

  • Leisure time at Palazzo

  • Visit at the “Cripta of the Original Sin” and Tour in the Sassi of Matera

  • Special Aperitivo at the Corte S. Pietro among the ancient cisterns in a suggestive atmosphere.

  • Dinner in Matera at “Da Francesca”

23 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • Visit to market to buy provisions for dinner

  • Drive to Taranto (food from market will be brought back to hotel by hotel staff)

  • Lunch at the old island section of Taranto, in a very informal but typical seafood restaurant: Frisc e mang (like a fish and chips but in a southern Italian way!)

  • Back to the Palazzo and time to relax

  • “Mozzarella lesson” at Aperitivo time

  • Dinner at Palazzo Margherita prepared by Michael and the guests

  • Screening of Italian film in Francis Ford Coppola’s screening room(chosen by Paul Athanas from our library of Italian movies)

24 Maggio:

  • Optional early morning visit to Metaporto to meet the fishermen as they bring in their catch

  • Drive to Polignano a Mare in Puglia

  • Lunch at the fabulous seafood restaurant Tucino in Polignano al Mare

  • Free time to relax at Palazzo Margherita or visit the historic center of Bernalda

  • Dinner at Palazzo Margherita prepared by staff

  • Tasting of chocolates and dragees with a selection of our

25 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • Visit to the organic farm on the Ionian coast where we will get provisions for dinner

  • Lunch at the farm

  • Tour in the Greek ruins: the Hera Temple, the Amphitheatre, the Museum in Metaponto

  • 1st part of the pizza lesson: preparation of the dough with the yeast base

  • Dinner prepared by Michael, Hotel Chef, and guests

  • Movie in the screening room: “Christ stopped at Eboli” (from the masterpiece of Carlo Levi on the Lucanian identity)

26 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • A day at the beach on the pristine Ionian sea

  • Lunch at beach

  • Trip to Matera: Palazzo Lanfranchi: Carlo Levi and the modern Museum Musma: Contemporary Sculpture Museum

  • Second part of pizza lesson: Traditional Pizza and Pizza alla Harry’s Pizzeria

  • Dinner: First course will be the pizzas prepared in the lesson

27 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • Tour in the Vulture area: Visit at the Cantine del Notaio in the Albanian town of Rionero

  • Lunch and wine tasting of the famous Aglianico del Vulture at the Cantine del Notaio

  • Tour of the vineyard with the owner of the cellar to experience the work of this season in the countryside

  • Dinner at the Palazzo  Margherita

28 Maggio:

  • Breakfast

  • Visit to a  Masseria: to experience the life of a family farm nowadays in Basilicata

  • Informal lunch: tasting of typical products in the countryside

  • On the way back, visit to the ancient Castle in Valsinni, once home to Isabella Morra the famous poetess of medieval times

  • Aperitivo in Bernalda at the Giardini Giamperduto among the olive trees

  • Special dinner at the Palazzo with live

29 Maggio:

  • Breakfast and Departure

Total per person for all meals, tours, guides and transportation: €1400.00
